Coolangatta - Gold Coast Holidays

Coolangatta is a city in the southern part of Gold Coast Australia, very close to the border between Queensland and New South Wales. The airport of Gold Coast is situated here. You can fly to the Great Barrier Reef in the south and come back within a day. The beaches in the northern side of Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay and Greenmount are famous as surfing and swimming beaches, apart from Duranbah and Snapper Rocks, also known as Flagstaff Beach. Anglers who like to fish enjoy Coolangatta for the bream, tailor and snapper available in plenty in the Coolangatta beaches.

It is believed that the charms of Coolangatta were discovered in the 1880s. The town of Coolangatta with its twin town of Tweed Heads were established around 1883. However, the first person to discover Coolangatta is mentioned as Captain Cook, when he arrived in this coast in 1770. He named the areas around Coolangatta as Point Danger and Mount Warning. The Tweed River developed into a port area around 1830 and cedar wood was shipped from there.

Located halfway between Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay is Greenmount which is the town of the first surf life saving club established in Gold Coast Australia in Queensland in 1909. Coolangatta as a Gold Coast holiday destination goes beyond just a swimming, beaches and surfing holiday resort location but is also a great family holiday destination for watching the annual migration of humpback whales from observation points at Point Danger. Visitors can also see dolphins and a myriad of birdlife from these locations. For those with a taste for the other side of our planet, there are also good scuba diving opportunities around Kirra and Cook Island.

Second Sunday of the month in Coolangatta is famous for shopping, markets and dining. The celebration of rock 'n' roll festival in June, known as 'Wintersun' and the September food feast on the beach as A La Carte should never be missed if you love Gold Coast holidays. New Year Eve will explode with fireworks from both New South Wales and Queensland, within an hour. The Captain Cook lighthouse is considered a tourist landmark not to be missed.
