For The Love Of King Flannel Sheets

Almost half of the human life span is spent in bed. So it goes without saying that having a very nice sleep is important to being healthy. Warm sheets pulled around the body might remind us of our infanthood, helping us to sleep better. And the right sized sheets for our mattress can make all the difference. King flannel sheets on a large bed in the middle of winter in a cold country might help the human spirit survive just a bit better.

Bed sizes in the United Kingdom differ from those in the United States and Canada, and also different from the bed sizes of Australia and Europe. While a regular mattress can be called a twin or a single in our experience, a real luxury mattress is a king. King flannel sheets need to fit a mattress that is up to twenty inches. What some people call a 'full' sheet set is often called a 'double' by others.

California king and normal king mattresses do not come with matching box springs. A box spring is the stiffer spring-filled mattress that goes beneath the softer covering mattress. Typically the box spring is covered with what is called a bed skirt. When buying a king flannel sheets set be sure to remember that the bed skirt must be able to fit over not one, but two box springs placed side by side inside the bed frame.

Sheets themselves come in many different materials, from silk and satin to flannel or cotton. Flannel itself has a varied history from France and early Germany. It is a soft woven fabric made with what is called a nap. A nap is the rough surface that fabric has that is often sheared off. Flannel or flannelette keeps its nap and is that much warmer. That's why if you're going to be buying king flannel sheets, be sure that you're ready for the cozy warmth. If you're living in an area with a variety of temperatures, hot in summer, cold in winter, you may want a second set of sheets for the other seasons.

Flannel surprisingly has an interesting modern association. In the cities of Seattle and Vancouver, the grunge music scene picked up what lumberjacks in the area used to wear. Flannel clothing has always been especially prized by people working outdoors. Somehow the grunge rockers found a way to incorporate it in their look. Now flannel is known for musicians like Kurt Cobain and Stone Temple Pilots.

Flannel is also getting a new update. JCPenney has come out with its trademarked Micro Flannel, a product that is considered wrinkle free. When you pull your king flannel sheets out of the dryer and move to take them to the bed, you no longer have to worry about the creases that develop between the bed and the dryer. These sheets also require less care and maintenance. Less washing and drying time means lower energy impact on the environment. This might only matter in hotels or bed and breakfast type of situations, but every little bit counts.

Some flannel sheets come with pockets to enhance the warmth that they hold in. Flannel itself is best known for being used for children's pyjamas, especially in winter. Adult pyjama pants also use flannel. The feeling of having a king flannel sheets set around our bodies is one we all cherish and seek out, so it's no wonder it finds its way into our clothing.

Having a bed big enough to handle king flannel sheets sounds like a true luxury. Having all that room to roll around in, without bumping anyone else who has joined in your cozy little world of warmth, sounds utterly divine. A king sized bed, the right type of flannel sheets, and some good company would make anyone stay home on a Monday!
