Creating A Caravan Porch Awning For Your Family

One of the great products you can use to live outdoors regardless of the weather is an awning. If you're looking to protect yourself from the weather and create a peaceful environment for your road trip, then a caravan porch awning is the way to go.

Difficulty: Easy

Directions

Items You'll Be Using:

1. Canvas tarp

2. A roll of measuring tape

3. Some Rope (nylon if you can)

4. Stakes for tents

5. Poles that are adjustable for tents

6. Scotchguard With Weatherproofing Feature

Brainstorming Stage

This simple step is simply determining how big your caravan awning should be based on the space you have. Use your tape measure to figure out the caravan's length. Tarps made out of canvas can be obtained in many sizes, but most are around nine feet in depth.

Purchasing Canvas Tarp

Call a canvas tarp dealer and speak with someone experienced with the various sizes of canvas tarps and their purposes. Let them know what your awning's dimensions are going to be, and place an order that will match your caravan.

Buy Remaining Supplies

Any outdoors store should have tent stakes, poles and nylon rope. Be safe and purchase one hundred feet of nylon rope and six tent poles -- that ought to be enough for any caravan awning. Try using pre-made pieces to make your building the awning that much easier. Get the pieces and items all together once that canvas tarp is delivered and get ready to put up your caravan porch awning -- initially, at home.

Using The Right Area

Park your caravan in a large enough space that fit the awning you're desiring to build. The best thing to do is pick a spot with very soft earth. If you have to be somewhere not so soft, it's not the end of the world. For tar roadways, use tent stakes and metal nails to drive through the tar. For concrete, hammer a stake into a crack, which will also avoid unnecessary damage.

Putting It All Together

Place your canvas tarp on the ground and arrange it so as to correspond with each side toward the proper corner of your caravan. Attach the tip of one tent pole into the grommet of the canvas tarp corner you have closest to the caravan. Make sure you lift the corner of your awning until it becomes vertical. Stake this pole into the ground, taking care to hold it in place until it's securely in the earth.

Putting On Your Awning Line

Making an awning line isn't complicated -- use fifteen feet of your nylon rope and, at one end, make a loop and knot it tightly so it will remain at the appropriate side of the canvas. Be careful to use this loop to throw it over the highest point of your vertical pole, which should enable you to secure the other end with a stake, which will be pushed down into the canvas tarp by that loop. Be sure that your loose end rope is always hammered down with a stake.

Finish The Tent Poles

Connect your final tent poles to their corresponding grommets. When finished, you should be looking at three awning poles for the rear and three more for the front of the awning.

Keeping Your Awning Safe

Now you have your caravan porch awning and it looks great, but it's very susceptible to weather damage. Spray your canvas tarp down with the Scotchguard you bought. Leave your tarp for three hours so it can dry, then go for a second coat. When you're through, your awning will be weatherproofed for good. Remember to store your awning in a dry and cool place.
