The coastline of Tuscany
The coast of Tuscany boasts miles of unspoilt, sandy beaches making it an ideal holiday destination. However, holidays in Tuscany needn't be the usual run of the mill, as you'll find there is so much more to do than just lazing in the sun.

Tuscany has 16 beaches that have been awarded the 'Blue Flag' accolade; the award which denotes cleanliness and high environmental standards.
In north Tuscany, the beaches in the Versilia region are renowned for their nightlife. The coast here is for those who like to be organised - there are parasols, deckchairs and sun loungers, with snacks and drinks available in the many bars and cafes.
If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, head further south to the beaches in the region of Pisa. The beaches here are narrower, but with the advantage of picturesque woodland backing right onto the coast. In common with Versilia, although the water is clean, the currents here tend to be strong and, like much of the Tuscan coast, you should beware of deep water close to the beach, as the Tyrrhenian sea is inclined to shelve quite steeply.
Situated halfway between Florence and Siena, the walled village of San Gimignano is also well worth a visit. Originally there were 72 towers here, built by the wealthy families of the area as status symbols. Although only 14 of those towers now remain, they still dominate the surrounding mediaeval architecture, giving the modern day visitor a feeling of stepping back in time.
If you're brave enough to try any of these more demanding activities, or even if you've just been lying in the sun reading your book, you'll want to retire to somewhere really comfortable at the end of the day. Fortunately you'll find plenty of hotels in Tuscany to choose from. Whether you prefer bed and breakfast, a self-catering villa, or the full-on luxury of a first class hotel, you won't be disappointed.
If pampering is what you require from your holidays in Tuscany, then perhaps you should consider the beach resort of Forte Dei Marmi. Not only does it have a magnificent stretch of golden sands, but also the town itself, centred on an impressive marble fortress, has an abundance of stylish shops, pavement cafes and top class restaurants. Here you can enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere you might expect to find in Italy, together with all the facilities you could hope for on a beach holiday.
Hotels in Tuscany are excellent and plentiful. Whether you choose to explore the exciting coastline or the ancient towns of this gorgeous region, you are sure to be able to find something to please.
