The Costa Del Sol Has Plenty Of Sun And Sand

Malaga, Spain, is a delightful spot on the Costa Del Sol. Who wouldn't want to spend a holiday in this medieval treasure?

Visiting Malaga is like traveling back in time. You feel as if Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are about to ride up to you, there are so many historic traces about the town. One of the best places to visit is El Alcazaba, an 11th century palace built over the remains of a Roman amphitheater. El Alcazaba is now the home of the Provincial Archeological Museum and houses pieces as ancient as the Paleolithic era.

Another key place to visit is the Cathedral, which was built over a mosque. While one tower is still unfinished, most of the structure was built between 1528 and 1782. The main altar is a beautifully reverent site, lit only by the light coming in through the retrochoir's stained glass windows. You will also admire the cathedral's faade and elegant wood carvings, which have inspired the faithful for many generations.

If you are an art lover, you won't want to miss Pablo Picasso's home and the museum of this Malaga native's works. There are also many other museums and historic sites to explore throughout the region.

Perhaps the best museum is the city itself, which still retains aspects of its ancient roots. As with all of Andalucia, Malaga loves its festivals and there is nearly always one taking place. In August, take in the sound and fury of the Flamenco Fair. In spring, Holy Week and Easter are remarkable for their pageantry. In January, there is a boisterous Epiphany parade. It will feel as if you are back in the times of knights errant and ladies fair.

If you happen to visit during one of the very rare times a festival is not taking place, just visit the fishermen's wharf for some true street theater. Its boardwalk has countless bars and restaurants with musicians and dancers indulging in native rhythms. You will surely catch the spirit of this lively people.

There is always something to do in Malaga, but if you need a rest, you can always spend some time on the renowned beaches. Listen to the waves crashing on the surf as you work on your tan. You will come away relaxed and refreshed.

Not to worry: Just because a town has a medieval flair, doesn't mean it lacks modern amenities. There is plenty of nightlife and all the other modern necessities today's tourist needs. There is great food and great shopping and plenty of accommodations to suit everyone's needs.
