What Are Things To Do In Riga

The capital of Latvia, Riga is an increasingly popular destination for a city break, or slightly longer visit. One of the oldest cities in Europe, its popularity is not surprising. A natural crossroads between the east and the west of the continent, the city has been a place for trade and entertainment for centuries. Today, there are things to do Riga for everyone, from music to clubbing and everything in between.

At the city's heart is the Old Town; which exudes culture and heritage. This is typified by the 13th century St. Peter's Church which, though heavily reconstructed and rebuilt, maintains its status affording a spectacular view from its spire.

Other highlights in the Old Town include the Dome Cathedral and museums of Freedom and War, which highlight Latvia's turbulent history. The Swedish Gate, the only remnant of the city wall that used to surround Riga is an exceptional visit, whilst Riga Castle too makes a compelling trip.

In marked contrast to such historical sights, the more modern city has embraced cafe culture. There are few streets that do not have at least one of their own, whilst the pastries and coffees offered are amongst the best in Europe. With most opening for breakfast too, it is a great to start the day, every day.

As well as cafes, there are many restaurants and bars to enjoy. These include popular chains of course, though for novel all Latvian approach, the Staburags is worthy of a meal. You feel transported back to the medieval times, though the food is anything but.

Shopping trips to Riga are very popular, as the major chains have rushed in. With boutique shops and major department stores also here, a day spent at the stores is great for many. End the day with a coffee in one of the cafes, before heading back to get ready for the night. And it is here that the city really comes to life.

For those wishing to continue their cultural experience, no visit to Riga would be complete without taking in a night at the National Opera House. Playing host to the well reputed Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, their concerts are well attended and respected in the arts field. For younger families, an evening trip to the Puppet Theater is delightful.

When discussing things to do Riga however, there has to be mention of the club scene. There are many to trawl around, and a year could be spent here without visiting all of them. They cater for every interest, though the dedicated clubber will be interested in Voodoo and La Rocca in particular. For something a little more adult, the Jockey Club makes an excellent place to relax.
