Some Reasons Why Airlines Offer Cheap Flights And How Travelers Can Get Them
It often seems virtually impossible to find the cheap flights that airlines advertise. The fares look good, but when you try to reserve them, there are so many rules and restrictions that you sometimes wonder if the airline is purposefully trying to discourage people from actually booking them. It's even more frustrating to be told that they are already all sold out on the flight that you had hoped to travel on. You wonder what on earth is going on. Is the airline playing some sort of game with it's passengers? What do you have to do in order to get one of these fares?

The answer to that question is that the airline that is offering the fare isn't intentionally trying to play games with you. When it advertises seats at seat sale prices, it is usually trying to sell off its excess inventory and fill unpopular flights, just as a store owner will sometimes slash the price of merchandise that is not selling well. For that reason, these fares may only be available on inconvenient flights such as night or non-direct ones.
In offering promotional fares and seasonal seat-sales that require a certain amount of advance purchase, they hope to encourage travelers to make their travel plans early. By doing so, the traveler helps the airline to determine what it's flight loads will be like, and to ensure that it's flights will be filled to at least minimum capacity.
Another reason for offering seat sales is to entice passengers into booking with them, and not with their competitors.
Except in those cases where they are trying to fill up the remaining seats on a flight, airlines cannot afford to offer more than a small number of seats at deeply reduced rates per individual flight. Once all of the seats that they put aside to be sold at one of these types of fares have been taken, they usually do not add more. Obviously, the most convenient flights are the ones to sell out first.
People who can be very flexible in their travel plans are the ones best positioned to take advantage of sell-offs and seat sales. Flexibility on travel dates, and the willingness to take less desirable flights, or ones with many connections, is what often enables one person to get the fare when another person can't. Those individuals who are planning on traveling with a charter airline or discount carrier can sometimes benefit from last-minute seat sell-offs. However, you will need nerves of steel and exceptionally good timing in order to get the best possible rate if you choose to wait for the prices to start dropping. Wait too long, and there may be none left. On the other hand, you may believe that it's dropped as far as it can go, only to find out that you were wrong after booking your ticket.
The best way to find cheap fares is to search for them frequently. Seats that have been put on hold are often canceled. When this happens, the seat becomes available again, and if you are lucky you might be the one to get it. The trick is in keeping a close eye on those flights where very low fares are still available. The lower the fare, the more availability that there is on that flight. If the flight is heavily booked, the fares that are available will be very high. When someone releases a seat on a heavily booked flight, it will become available again only at a higher rate, even if it was previously booked on a seat sale fare. Your best chances are with flights that are not so heavily reserved already. It is flexibility and persistence that often make all the difference in getting the fare that you want.
