Midtown is New York's largest central business district. Midtown Manhattan is indubitably the busiest single commercial district in the United States and among the most powerful and diversely used pieces of real estate in the world. The great majority of New York City's skyscrapers, including its tallest hotels and apartment towers, lie within Midtown. More than 700,000 commuters work in its offices, hotels, and retail establishments; the area also hosts many tourists, visiting residents, and students.
Some areas, especially Times Square and Fifth Avenue, have massive clusters of retail establishments. Sixth Avenue in Midtown holds the headquarters of three of the four major television networks, and is one of a few global centers of news and entertainment. It is also a growing center of finance, second in importance within the United States only to Downtown Manhattan's Financial District. Times Square is also the epicenter of American theater.
You will find the best shopping in the world with names like Bloomingdales, Tiffany and Saks are found when you walk down Fifth Avenue. The largest Catholic Cathedral in the states, Saint Patrick's Cathedral is across the street. You won't want to miss the museums in the area that includes the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Television and Radio which is found on Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street. These house an excellent collection of vintage media.
Murray Hill area is a quieter residential area near the Midtown tunnel. The area has many nice brownstones and has some good moderately priced hotels. To the east you will find the United Nations building complex and the tramway to Roosevelt Island (featured in the movie "Spiderman"). The Morgan Library located on 36th Street offers a view of some very rare manuscripts.
