Whale Watching From a Small Boat

There are many options available for those wanting to embark on a whale watching expedition. From large boats with dozens of passengers to individual kayaks, getting up close to Orca and Killer whales can be done in a variety of ways. However, the most touted and effective way to see these magnificent creatures is by whale watching from a small boat.

A small, private tour company will generally have a boat that accommodates a limited number of whale watchers. While some large boats may carry upwards to 50 passengers, the smaller boat usually has a threshold of ten to 12 guests. The more intimate number provides each passenger with an equal opportunity to see and film the whales up close. There is no jostling to get to the railing with a smaller number of whale watchers aboard.

The smaller number of tourists on a small boat also gives the captain or tour guide a better chance to interact and educate during the excursion. Guests receive more than just a photo opportunity when they go whale watching from a small boat. They receive an education about the whales they see from people whose lives and business revolve around the whale's very existence. For first time whale watchers, this personalized experience will create a lasting memory that probably would not have been had on a large boat.

Off the northwest coast of Washington state are the San Juan Islands. This group of over 170 small islands in the Pacific Northwest are the year-round home to many amazing creatures, including a large pod of Orca whales. Small boat tours are often able to maneuver through the San Juan Islands Refuge with relative ease while searching for whales. Large boats are often unable to maneuver as quickly and efficiently through the waterways which makes the small boat expedition a wiser choice.

Orca and Killer whales who live close to the San Juan Islands are notorious for going out farther in the ocean when it is least convenient for tour operators. Small boat tour companies offer an added advantage during these times that larger boats cannot. Speed and maneuverability are the earmarks of small boats and captains take full advantage of these assets when the whales move farther out. Larger boats cannot offer the same benefit.

Each type of whale watching tour will have its pros and cons. Consider the price of each in regard to what is actually included in the expedition. The smaller boat company will usually offer a boat that is eco-friendly with greater maneuverability, fewer passengers and a more personal experience. Larger boats may sell tours at a lower price, but also include a large number of guests, a slower boat and less interaction with the knowledgeable captain. Any added cost in choosing a small boat whale watching tour is worth it for this once in a lifetime experience.
