A True Australian Experience
Fraser Island is in some places very similar to scenes from Star Wars: It is the world's largest Sand island. Four wheel driving along the east coasts Seventy-five Mile Beach or through the primal inland forests reveals an amazing mix of ancient rainforest's and mystical sand dunes.

Due to the numerous amounts of sand dunes, it is a very populated area for Sand Safaris. In order to travel around the terrain however, you must have a four wheel drive, as the lack of paved roads will destroy any normal car.
Many chose to tour Fraser Island through a nine person convoy. This is considered a self tour as nine individuals are grouped together, given a four wheel drive and directions and sent off on a three day two night camping trip. These tour tend to be less expensive and are great for making new friends and seeing the things that interest you. However the down side to these tours are that you may have an inexperienced driver in the group who is constantly bogging you down in the sand, there is a slight chance for a fatal accident and if the group does not get along it can be a long and stressful experience.
If you decide you would rather take going on the safari by your self you can hire your own 4WD from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island. All companies require a large credit card deposit and if your drive into the salt water this deposit will not be returned. Before you venture out you are required to watch an instructional video.
The Island is home to a fantastic array of wildlife including the purest strain of Dingo in Australia. Dingoes can appear quite tame at first especially around camp grounds but they are wild animals and their only interest in people is the food that they leave. This can be harmful to both campers and dingoes. In April 2001, Fraser Island was the setting for a controversial dingo cull following the killing of a nine year old boy. This is a sad tragedy as Dingoes are highly intelligent and sensitive animals and if they had not been fed and encouraged to visit the camp grounds by tourists, neither event would have happened.
