Beechworth is an elegant 19th century town in country Victoria, Australia. Very close to the town there are many different wineries that produce very good wines and ports. Tours of the vineyards are organized from in town and are a wonderful way to get to know the surrounding countryside. In addition to the surrounding wineries, back in town there is a micro brewery that has won loads of awards for its ales. At the tasting bar you can sample the full range and make an educated choice about which one you would like to accompany your lunch or dinner at the brewery.
For a snack to quell your hunger, a fantastic place to stop is the Beechworth Bakery. This is the most famous bakery in Australia, know for its hyperenergetic owner Tom O'Toole as much as its superb range of pastries and baked goods. There has been a bakery on the site since 1857 and the store still has its original facade.
Other local produce that makes the town a glorious place to visit for people with a real passion for food are the orchards, French olive groves, honey and mustards. There are a number of restaurants in town that produce delicious and varied seasonal menus using the best of locally grown foods.
Besides eating, there are many activities for all the family to enjoy around town. One of the most popular is to try gold panning at Sebastopol Park. In the 19th century gold fever hit town and people flocked from all around the world to prospect in the surrounding hills. You can try your luck too in genuine historical gold mining areas. This spot is also interesting historically as one of the places that bushranger Ned Kelly hid out.
There are a number of important local historical buildings and sites around town that are interesting for history buffs. Some of the colonial buildings include: police stables and lock up, the town hall, Robert O'Hara museum, Courthouse, Telegraph Station, Gold Warden's Office, Chinese Protectors Office and Gold Office. You can buy a ticket to visit all the historical buildings that lasts for two days.
Outside of town you can also venture into the historic hills to enjoy bushwalking and hiking in stunning Australian landscapes that are touched by history. Beechworth offers visitors a unique mixture of culture, history, food and dining and fun. There is a lot to see and do in this corner of north eastern Victoria. It makes the ideal place to get to know more about Australia's history as well as the Australia of today filled with hard working and easy going true blue Australians.
