Using The CARS Method When Renting Your Next Vehicle

CARS is one of the best methods around to assist you in finding the best deal on your car rental. It tends to be an overwhelming task, but following a mnemonic can make this task as easy as spelling C.A.R.S.

C- CHANGING pick up and drop off times and dates can significantly change the price on a vehicle rental, so if you have some flexibility in your travel schedule you will probably get a better overall rate. Try picking up on a Friday morning instead of a Thursday night, this can help cut you down to a weekend rate, or switch back to a Thursday night, for a lower rate. The same thing with a drop off, don't rush to bring a car back Sunday morning, when most car rental agencies don't come back in until Monday anyway. So many times you can pay until Sat night or Sunday but still return the car on Monday morning which gives you a free day.

A- ASK questions. Many people shy away from this, but it is the best way to know if you are getting taken for a ride. If you don't understand the rental agreement, ask. If you aren't sure what is included in the price you were quoted, ask. You will find that asking questions is the best way to know what you are really getting for your money.

R- While you are renting your vehicle you want to make sure that you READ all the paperwork put in front of you and always act RESPONSIBLE while driving the vehicle. Be sure to carefully review what you are liable for and always be sure to closely follow the rules of the road while driving. The papers that you sign at the rental counter are legally binding contracts and should not be taken lightly.

S- SERVICE. It is extremely important to find out what type of service coverage you have while you are on the road. Many people make the mistake of paying for things out of pocket for the vehicle that later they can't get reimbursed for. Road service is something that should be included but find out what they cover and who you need to call if you get stuck, many companies must pre-authorize any work that needs to be done, so get their consent in advance for any services.
