Choosing a caravan park

Many of us dream of owning a home away from home, a place where we can escape to whenever we like, relax and enjoy our leisure time as we please. Static holiday homes and lodges can offer an affordable way of making this dream a reality, with used caravans for sale regularly offered for under £5,000. Of course, there are some seriously luxurious holiday homes available too, with the latest models of high-end static caravans and lodges boasting a wealth of comforts and mod-cons. The British Holiday & Home Parks Association lists well over 2,000 parks across the whole of the UK that offer caravan sales, meaning that potential buyers are certainly spoilt for choice. With such a wide range of parks, it's worth considering a few holiday park fundamentals when you're deciding what you want from your new holiday home.

Perhaps the most obvious factor is the park's location. Do you hanker after the sandy beaches of Cornwall and Devon, the vibrant resorts of England's East Coast, or perhaps the tranquillity of the Scottish Highlands? Whatever your ideal location, it's worth considering that you'll get the most out of the holiday home lifestyle if you're no further away than two or three hours' drive away from where you live. This will enable you to pop away for short breaks easily and means that you'll spend more time relaxing and less in the car.

You should also think about when you want to use your caravan. Not all holiday parks are open for all 12 months of the year, with many closing for up to three months over the winter. So if you're hoping to use your holiday home as a base for Christmas and New Year celebrations, make sure the park you choose will allow for this.

Another way in which holiday parks vary is in the level of facilities, activities and entertainment they offer. How important is it to you and your family that the park has a swimming pool or a Kids Club? Some parks have incredible pool complexes and sports activities, making them ideal if you have children or grandchildren. Would you appreciate the option of an onsite bar and restaurant, or do you prefer a quieter atmosphere?

The important thing is that the park feels right for you, and you can only really judge this by visiting yourself. Most holiday parks are happy to arrange a guided tour for you, or you might want to book a break at a park that you're interested in so that you can really get to know it. The good news is that, with so many parks across the country, the chances are that you'll find a site for your static caravan that offers you exactly what you're looking for.
