Great lakes of Cornwall, England
When prospective visitors consider a holiday in Cornwall it is more than likely they will expect any potential water based activities will take place somewhere along the county's fantastic coastline. Yet, as one enters Cornwall along the A30, it will not take long before they realise that the duchy also boasts some impressive lakes - many of which are popular amongst canoeists, fishing enthusiasts and walkers. This article introduces some of the most appealing.

Colliford Lake
Colliford Lake and reservoir located near Hawks Tor is one of the first hints for new visitors to the county that there are plenty of freshwater havens to explore throughout the region. The lake is a popular destination for walkers and boasts a car park and a number of picnic areas - and is a great place to sample the unique windswept landscape of Bodmin Moor. Nature lovers will also be pleased to learn that the area is a good place for bird-watching. Fishing permits can be acquired from the nearby Jamaica Inn.
Stithians Lake
Located approximately halfway between Redruth and Falmouth in deepest South West Cornwall, Stithians Lake and Country Park is a great destination for those who want to get active on the water. A recently opened activity centre now offers sailing, canoeing, and windsurfing tuition as well as equipment hire - while cyclists should make the most of the cycle path up to the dam. There is a peaceful side to the lake too, with more than five miles of bank for walkers, fishing enthusiasts and bird watchers to explore. A campsite is also located nearby.
Argal Reservoir
Further south again, Argal Reservoir sits within a deep valley near the small town of Penryn. The walk that surrounds the lake can be completed in around an hour and takes you through meadows and woodland, while there are plenty of stop-off points to have a picnic, barbeque - and even a children's play area. Argal is also a good spot for coarse fishing (permits can be obtained at the site) and the neighbouring College Reservoir is a managed nature reserve.
Siblyback Lake
Again, Siblyback is another fantastic lake which seems all the better for its fantastic position on Bodmin Moor. Of all featured in this article, it is no doubt the most advanced in terms of public amenities and includes an activity centre - with rowing boat hire - play areas and an acclaimed lakeside cafe. There are also fantastic walks up to and around the lake - and across the dam. Fishing enthusiasts may also like to book boat trips, also available from the activity centre.
