The United Kingdom is home to an astonishing array of flora and fauna and contains a plethora of architectural gems and cultural institutions. From the subtropical beauty of the Scilly Isles to the Shielings of the farming communities still standing in Scotland, the United Kingdom has much to offer even the most demanding holidaymaker. Recently, tourism in the UK has enjoyed an upsurge with more and more families choosing to take a 'staycation' including ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown and current incumbent of No.10, David Cameron.

According to Britain's national tourism agency, Visit Britain, there has been a steady increase in the number of domestic trips taken in the UK since 2008 and figures show a 7.76% increase between 2008 and 2009 (Jan-Dec) with numbers predicted to keep rising. And the variety doesn't end with choosing a location; the next most important aspect of planning a UK holiday will be selecting suitable accommodation.

The increase in the number of UK residents deciding to take a domestic holiday has inevitably led to a commensurate rise in the range of holiday accommodation options which now encompass all types of accommodation from bed and breakfasts or hotels to the traditional holiday parks hosting caravan and tent pitches.

One advantage of the holiday park is that touring caravan sites and caravan parks can be located in areas that are inappropriate for larger structures such as hotels or guest houses. These types of holiday park can often be constructed in a 'natural' setting, close to areas of natural interest whether that is coastal or rural. Parks often provide extensive facilities for guests such as food and drinks or activities which are particularly convenient when travelling as a family. Caravan holidays also have the added advantage of mobility and flexibility; if you own a caravan, you can decide exactly how much or how little to explore whilst on holiday.

For those who would prefer less conventional accommodation, there are also holiday parks available that have Tipis and Yurts which have proved popular with holiday-makers in the 25-32 age bracket, possibly as they try to re-create experiences from gap-year travels. These 'homes' provide a surprisingly high level of comfort to travellers.

Hotels and bed and breakfast establishments can offer a comfortable base from which to explore and are often available in city centres or business districts making them a favourite of the business traveller. Proximity to railway stations or airports can be a real bonus for the time-poor Executive.

There are also some quirky gems offered for accommodation from farmhouses to narrow boats; a search will yield some surprising results.

With such a variety of accommodation, whether you choose to stay at a caravan site or at a hotel, standards vary widely. Travellers are advised to try to find reviews of potential accommodation before booking.
