You can venture around the city yourself or with a Rome travel guide to lead you on your way. Before you travel here write down an itinerary of the places you wish to go and if not using a guide to get there write down the addresses and do the necessary research before your trip. This allows you to get to where your going safely and accurately.
Of course one of the first places you will want to journey is Rome's city center and probably the most popular attraction is the Colosseum. The building of this magnificent architectural wonder started in 70 AD and was not completed until 80 AD. The Emperor when it was finished was Titus. Many fires around and within this attraction as well as a few earthquakes have caused damage to its structure, but even now you can still feel what it must have been like all those centuries ago.
Inside spectators of 50,000 could be seated around its six acres. Layered seating all the way around and to the top gave all spectators a grand view of the excitement and entertainment below them. Close by the Colosseum you will find the school where the gladiator's were trained.
Near the training area you will also see where many a gladiator came to have his injuries treated in the medical hub and the ones who died during combat where laid to rest in the burial grounds of gladiators near by also. Although no extreme fights or otherwise has happened in many years it is now used for more grand purpose such as the Pope's Good Friday Procession each year and other ceremonies religious in nature. A far cry from the mortal combat of days of old.
The magnificent Pantheon is at least 1,800 years in age. It looks almost as it was long ago, like it stayed preserved in those moments of time. The true meaning of Pantheon is said to mean "Temple to the Gods". Its structure was completed by the order of Hadrian the Emperor in 125 AD.
One of the most artistic historical marvels is that of the transfixing Sistine Chapel and the beautiful ceiling paintings of Michelangelo which covers most of the ceiling in artistic magic. Michelangelo was one of the most notable and talented artists during the Renaissance era and this depicts his true talent. You can almost see him making each brush stroke within today, it has held up through the centuries and is still a sight to be seen.
As the Colosseum in Rome is a grand sight to see, the food you will find in Rome are just as memorable. The city offers mouth-watering dishes of pasta, vegetables and meat to suit everyone's taste. You also don't find a lack of desserts and if you are here when the weather is warmer, you must try the gelato in Rome.
