Mount Kilimanjaro, which is in Tanzania, is the most popular trekking tourist attraction to be found in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro offers trekkers the challenge of the highest mountain peak on the continent and perhaps surprisingly, you don't need specialist equipment in order to reach its summit. Other challenging and rewarding treks offering fantastic views and peaks are the Fish River Canyon, which is in Namibia and Wild Coast, which can be found in South Africa.
Approximately 180 km north of Nairobi you will find Mount Kenya. This is Africa's second highest mountain, (after Kilimanjaro) and again, you won't need specialist equipment in order to reach either of the two peaks. Mount Kenya is best climbed during the months of January to February or July to October. You will find huts situated on the mountain for accommodation purposes or campsites for those who are camping on their Kenya holiday.
During the months of May to October a real must see is Tsavo National Parks, which are split into two parks, Tsavo East and then Tsavo West. The landscape is vast and wild, Tsavo East is more easily accessible than Tsavo West, but you will find it less developed. A real treat in Tsavo West would be to observe the hippos and elephants bathing together, alongside crocodiles. There is a specialist underwater glass tank for this purpose. You will find Tsavo National Parks about three or four hours drive from Mombasa.
Moving away from the more traditional safari holidays in Kenya you will find yourself in the small towns of Malindi and Watamu. The beaches around Malindi help to give it its status as one of the main tourist attractions in Kenya. It is a perfect destination for snorkellers. Watamu offers swimming with the dolphins and a range of water sports.
Another popular visitor attraction is Amboseli National Park. You can either get a scheduled flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, these occur daily, or it's about a four-hour drive from Nairobi. It has some truly amazing, breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and some fantastic wildlife such as cheetah, hippo and the magnificent elephants. There are over 50 species of mammals here and many species of birds. It is home to the Masai and their many cattle, centred around Observation Hill.
There are a couple of key essential items that will make your safari experience more remarkable. If you have the opportunity, invest in a good quality camera and a decent pair of binoculars. On safari these are probably two of the most important items you will need.
No Kenya holiday would be complete without a visit to Lake Nakuru National Park, which is open all year round. Here you will be able to witness the magnificent flamingos that come in their millions to rest on the shallow waters of the lake.
