New York hotels - how to find the best budget hotels

Trying to find good budget New York hotels is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. If you are dazed and confused by the entire process you can be forgiven. New York is immense and confusing for first time visitors at the best of times - particularly when you consider that over 8 million people are living in or visiting the City at any one time.

Added to this, an unprecedented wave of recent openings of hotels and hostels has meant that picking what's good, and avoiding what's not, has never been trickier. Here we've created a guide to hotel bookings, to help you take the juiciest bite of the Big Apple that you can afford.

Word of Mouth
It's always good to speak to those who've visited New York before, they can offer advice from best sights to see, and things like how to get cheap Broadway tickets, to pointing you in the direction of the best budget hotels. There's no better advertisement for a place than to have it recommended from someone you know so start asking and people will be pleased to tell you of the places to aim for and where to avoid.

Don't be afraid of Hostels
Those who've never stayed in a hostel before needn't be afraid of taking the plunge. They can offer a brilliantly located place to stay for a fraction of the price of a hotel. Not only that, but the communal sleeping arrangements of a hostel can ensure you make some great friends on your travels and may experience some unforgettable nights out. Hostels can be an ideal choice for those travelling on their own but may not be such a fantastic option for a romantic valentine's getaway. Think about what you're looking for from your accommodation before you book.

Book online
Booking New York Hotels on a hotel booking site can in itself usually offer the best hotel deals and discounted rates to booking directly with the hotel. They allow you to search by your priorities, whether that is your budget, location or star rating and there are usually guest reviews to be found online too. Make the most of the internet, it has all the information you need at your finger tips. While brochures and travel agents have a limited selection on offer, the internet will hold details of everything that is out there and will guide you in the right direction of what you're looking for.

Look further afield
If you can't bear the thought of roughing it in a one or two star venue but don't mind commuting into the City each day, then another option for New York sightseers on a budget is to stay outside of the expensive centre. Many people choose to stay at airport hotels, which will provide comfortable accommodation at a much lower price. Make like the city slickers every day and commute in and out on the train - most airport hotels will provide a free shuttle bus every hour to the train service at the airport, which will then take you directly to New York's centre. If you do go for this option consider whether you will be having late nights in the City that never sleeps. The train service stops around midnight and you may find yourself stranded, wishing you had gone for that reasonably priced one star hotel just around the corner.
