Travel Destination Russia Facts and Figures

Stretching across the northern end of the globe and bordering dozens of countries Russia is a massive countries. With all the problems it had with smaller countries trying to break away from its grip the Bear is still a big country. It is not as elusive as in the past and yet the world still does not know much about it. That said it is a very attractive tourist destination.
Many lands in one state one could say looking at the 9500 kilometers from east to west and 5000 kilometers from north to south. Starting within the Arctic Circle a part of the north is very cold and much of it has cold winters. The coldest region being Siberia. It is part of Asia and Europe and many people can not even speak Russian.
Civil war within its own borders and with America and eventually Germany pushing it to the limit as a Super Power, it might have lost its position as such yet smaller countries are very aware of their neighbor. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to name a few have been over run by Russian troops. Other countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany and Poland all have governments sympathetic to the Soviets Union.
The Soviet Union is a permanent member of the United Nations and played a major role in helping the Egyptians building the Aswan Dam. They have tried to better their role as one of the world leaders.
Sport
The country delivered and is still delivering exceptional people and sportsman. Tchaikovsky is one of the Great Russian composers. Laika the dog became the first creature to be sent in space and the Russians also launched the first satellite. After that Yuri Gagarin became the first human to circle the Earth as a cosmonaut.
Time Zones
The country stretches across eleven time zones and includes many types of climate. More than a hundred languages
Moscow
This city is the heart of Russia and a very old city. At its center is the Kremlin with Red Square along one side of the walls. The tomb of Lenin is also in Red square.
Arts and Culture
Ballet is an art taken seriously by the Russians and the Bolshoi is one of the greatest theatres in the world where you can go and watch some ballet. All forms of art were controlled by the state and to a great extent are still. Nevertheless even the uneducated people have a rich enjoyment of the arts. Despite censorship some outstanding books have come from these writers. Doctor Zhivago for one, a book not published at home.
Arctic Transport
If you want to go to the North Pole you can do it from Russia. The Lenin was the world s biggest ice breaker and Ice breakers are needed to put you on the North Pole. It is here at the side of this enormous country where the Bering Sea froze up, allowing the first people to cross to the Americas.
While you may not be allowed to go everywhere you can see a lot of Russia and if you have the money it should be on your list of places to see.
