What is it that makes Cape Town (or The Mother City, for those who know it well) so special? It's hard to take a winning recipe apart and mention a single ingredient, but take stunning natural surroundings, beautiful people, world class facilities and give them away at budget prices and you have a heady mix that is bound to draw millions.
Prices are not in the same dollar-a-day range as that of some other budget destinations, like Bolivia to name just one example. But if you take into account what is on offer here, you still get excellent value for your money. Cape Town is host to some of the top hotels in the world and the restaurants are generally of a very high standard as well.
For those with little money and large appetites, Cape Town has a lot to offer too. There are many cheap eateries where you can get a filling meal for a few dollars. There's also enough hostels and cheap guest houses to ensure that no weary backpacker will ever have to sleep outside!
One of the city's best-loved travel destinations is called Table Mountain, and looms over the city like a guardian angel. It's easy to see where the name comes from: from far away the top of the mountain indeed looks as flat as a table. There's a cable car to the top for those who like their conveniences, but if you are a true adventure traveler you will take one of the many hiking trails. It only takes a few hours to reach the summit. Just beware of Cape Town's notoriously unpredictable weather.
White water rafting on the rivers surrounding the city is another favorite pastime for adventure travelers. There are a number of companies specializing in this, and tours are generally reasonably priced and well organized.
An activity that is certainly exciting but sometimes controversial is shark cage diving. You will put on diving gear and then be lowered into the waters of the ocean surrounded by a metal cage until you come into very close contact with the members of the great white shark family. These guys usually look very hungry and you are sure to appreciate the steel bars separating you.
Another activity that will provide a rush to adrenalin junkies is that of bungee jumping. There are a couple of hair raising locations near Cape Town where those who need a daily dose of adrenalin can jump off a bridge or other high point into the depths below with nothing but a bungee cord to keep you from plunging into the waters below.
Cape Town is surrounded by lots of wine farms, many of them producing award-winning wines. No visit to the city is therefore complete without bringing a visit to one of these farms. Many wine farms offer wine-tasting sessions and you can also buy a couple of bottles for your friends and family back home. What a perfect way to wrap up your days of adventure travel in Cape Town, South Africa!
