Barcelona Breaks

Ever since the city's roaring success at hosting the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona has been transformed into one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. The transformations leading up to the Olympics opened up the city to the sea, which has turned Barcelona into a great place to see the sand and the sun as well as its many other cultural, sporting and gastronomic offerings.

Winter is a great time to go as there are so many budget deals available. Entrance prices to the city's major attractions will be at a reduced price and companies such as Fly Monarch are offering great online, off peak winter holiday deals, including cheap flights and budget stays in top accommodation.

Barcelona is a highly versatile destination. Younger generations of visitors will, no doubt, want to take advantage of its buzzing nightlife. Everyone can enjoy the beautiful architecture on display all over the city and there is plenty to occupy the culture vultures amongst you besides. As an added bonus, Barcelona also makes a beautiful beach break.

Art lovers should head straight for the Fundacio Joan Miro and the Picasso Museum. Not only do these collections house many of the greatest works of these two internationally renowned artists, they are also well organised, creatively displayed, very pleasant spaces to explore.

Gaudi and his dreamlike architecture brings many a visitor to the city, and simply wandering around the wide and attractive streets of the city will afford many a glimpse of some of the designers greatest work. Try to visit the Sagrada Familia early in the morning or just before closing. This is when it will be quietest and at its most atmospheric.

For great Catalan food, indulge in the full three course meal experience at a fabulous local restaurant. Steer clear of the main streets, and try to spot where the locals are dining and you are far more likely to get good quality grub at a reasonable price.

For the full gastronomic experience, add a bottle of the best local tipple to your meal, whether it's beer, wine or sangria. For a novelty drinking experience, head to Chupitos where you will find a highly imaginative range of cocktails (including the Harry Potter cocktail, which shoots sparks at you before it is consumed).

For a better look at Barcelona before you book, the light-hearted French language film, 'L'Auberge Espagnol' follows the exploits of a young French exchange student inhabiting the city for the first time. The film conveys something of the convivial atmosphere of Barcelona as well as giving you a chance to get a better look at some of its most beautiful sites.
