The International Spotlight Shines Again on Muskoka as Top 2011 Summer Trip Destination

Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario - In the spring of 2010 when the leaders of the foremost industrialized nations of the world converged on Huntsville, Muskoka for the G8 Summit, Muskoka resort owners and tourist operators believed that the widespread worldwide media exposure that the Muskoka region received from this major international event just couldn't get any better in terms of promoting this beautiful Ontario tourist region. However, when Muskoka grabbed the top spot on National Geographic Traveler online's top ten summer travel destinations list this spring, the buzz created by receiving this distinctive honour, is predicted to surpass the fabulous publicity generated by the G8 event. Muskoka cottage resort owner and operator Bruce Howell, of Colonial Bay Cottage Resort (http://www.colonialbay.com) on Peninsula Lake close to Huntsville, is thrilled that Muskoka has been recognized in this way. "This is fabulous for tourism in Muskoka. Having a well respected travel authority like National Geographic tell the world that Muskoka is the best place anywhere for a vacation is the kind of publicity that you just can't buy at any price," says Howell.

According to the editors of National Geographic Traveler Magazine, Muskoka took the number one spot on their annual "Ten Best Trips of the Summer" report because it offers "an unplugged pace that's a world away from Canada's largest city." The magazine looked at attributes such as uniqueness and authenticity when considering a region for their top ten list. Beating out well known destinations such as Washington's San Juan Islands, the Azores in Portugal, and Patagonia, Argentina, Muskoka now ranks with some of the most popular and exotic vacation destinations in the world. According to Keith Bellows, National Geographic Traveler's editor and chief, Muskoka claimed top spot because, "The region is true to itself."

According to Michael Lawley executive director of Muskoka Tourism, tourism generates approximately $476 million annually and 57 percent of the region's GDP is derived from tourism. Since the National Geographic top ten list has been released, the Muskoka tourism office has seen an increase in the number of inquires, with most calls coming from the US. An advertising agreement between National Geographic, the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership and Muskoka Tourism will provide further exposure for the Muskoka tourist region. Including purchased summer and fall advertising supplements, National Geographic estimates that these projects will produce 17.7 million impressions in their print publications and an additional 15 million impressions through online editorials, twitter feeds and banner ads. For Muskoka resort owners, businesses and tourist operators, the economic benefits of this kind of exposure can't be overstated.

"The people of Ontario have always realized the appeal of vacationing in Muskoka. The Muskoka Lakes region has long been considered one of Canada's most beautiful areas. Since its ranking as the best summer trip destination by National Geographic Traveler, the rest of the world will know about the joys of a Muskoka vacation as well. This bodes well for Muskoka's tourism industry and economic future," claims Howell.
