A short guide to the Tunisian coast

Tunisia is located in central northern Africa in between Libya to the east and Algeria to the west. The country has long been a popular destination for European holidaymakers, and in the post-credit-crunch climate considers to be a formidable choice for those searching for cheap sun holidays. What follows is a short guide to some of the most significant holiday destinations on its 1,148 km coast.

Tabarka
Situated in the far west of the country, Tabarka boasts a varied cultural history passed down from the Phoenician, Arabic, Roman and Turkish civilizations. This is evident from quaint architecture of the town's houses, but also from the grand Genoese castle that in habits its own offshore island. The town is quiet and unspoiled and has a relatively small population of no more than 16,000. And, as of most of the country's coastline, the Mediterranean sea is wonderfully clear - welcoming divers and bathers to explore the abundant ecosystem under the waves.

Tunis
By something of a contrast, Tunisia's capital: Tunis, is home to over a million people. Again, the city has a rich and vibrant history - perhaps best exemplified by the remains of the ancient city of Carthage. Tunis is also known for its central medina, as bustling part of the town consisting of narrow streets and mazelike walkways. The Porte de France and Zitouna Mosque are also popular attractions.

Sousse
Further east, Sousse is located 140 km from the capital. The city is well know for is beaches, and boasts an impressive golden seafront which pays host to over a million visitors every year. Sousse is also known for its nightlife and features many nightclubs and restaurants to be explored. The intriguing historical architecture of the city's medina has earned the area UNESCO World Heritage Site status which ensures that the centre cannot be developed.

Djerba
Djerba is an island located off the coast just over thirty miles from the border of Libya. The island is home to a beautiful coastline and is renowned for great aesthetics - earning it a reputation as a prime filming location for such movies as George Lucas' Star Wars. Djerba also has a number of specific attractions, such as the oldest Synagogue in the world: El Ghriba, and the Djerba Fort.
