This takes some planning but it is easy once you figure out how to do it. Just know that a sleeping compartment on a train in Europe means something different than one in India. In India there are no compartments and you just have a bed. Having a compartment means paying a lot.

If you prefer to do sightseeing by yourself, then make use of packaged tours

Renting
If you are a few people and will stay for a week or more you can rent a room, an apartment or cottage. Local tourist offices will assist you or find places in travel magazines. Book as early as possible.
Hostels and Chap Four Star Hotel
The least expensive short term accommodation can be found in hostels. Here you meet other travelers. Some stay in hostels for months while others will be gone by morning. They come and go and this is a rich source of advice on where to go, what to see. Often you need to book in the morning as they fill up quickly. While this is not very private, the bunker beds can range from 4 to 50 people all in the same room. You can lock up your bags when out but the only privacy will be using the toilet and taking a shower.
