A Visit To Cairns In The Tropical North Queensland Region Of Australia

The north coast of Far North Queensland houses Cairns, close by many natural attractions like the Atherton Tableland, the Daintree Rain forest and the Great Barrier Reef. The scenery is beautiful because it is close to the ocean and the mountains of the Great Dividing Range. Due to all this natural beauty Cairns attracts a large number of tourists, and they are fortunate because there are a lot of accommodations there, sized to suit any need.

The discovery of gold is what created the town of Cairns in 1876. With Trinity Inlet being a great way to transport the gold more industry was created. An agricultural base and a saw mill joined which meant the town would continue to flourish after the gold was gone. The railroad came which brought more workers which increased the agricultural base. Cairns grew rapidly as a center of commerce and improved the public utilities and transportation, it became an official town in 1903 as the population continued to grow.

There are wonderful natural areas nearby and the environmental awareness is high in Cairns. There are multiple national parks and preserves surrounding the town such as Undara Volcanic National Park, Daintree National Park and the Hann Tableland area. These areas are a tourist destination for ecotourists and researchers, home to wildlife and plants. While visiting these beautiful natural areas most visitors stay in Cairns because there are so many choices in places to stay. There are campgrounds and smaller hotels near the national parks too.

Another major destination for tourists is the architectural marvel of Paronella Park. It's a concrete castle with Moorish influence in its architecture built in the 30's by Jos Paronella. It's a very unusual structure, captivating even with some damage through the years. Mr Paronella is the builder also of the first hydroelectric generator for Queensland and it's now being brought back to life. Paronella Park has nice surrounding grounds that are kept in their original status as much as possible. There's also a ballroom and a theater that can be seen in a tour.

If you're a sun seeker, Cairns and Port Douglas have the beaches and tropical climate you dream about. There are plenty of accommodations to choose from, luxury resorts to hotels right on the beach to extended stay apartments and homes for rent. Budget challenged visitors will have a good choice also. But make sure to book your stay early as the places in Cairns fill up quickly even in the off season due to the international appeal.
