Exploring Canada's World Heritage Sites

Perhaps when you hear someone talk about taking an international vacation, you think about hours of travel, foreign languages and exorbitant costs. UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places specially recognized for their importance in our history of humanity. One of these sites is the Nahanni National Park Reserve. Rushing through this Reserve is the South Nahanni River, which flows past four huge canyons, eventually plummeting down in Virginia Falls, a giant waterfall twice as high as Niagara Falls. This park has sulfur hot springs, around which 100-foot-tall tufa mounds, over 10,000 years old, are located. Also in this park are complex systems of caves, which definitely warrant exploring.

Dinosaur Provincial Park is a rich source of dinosaur fossils. It is, in fact, the richest supply of these antiquities in the world, sharing over 500 excavated fossils with museums in every corner of the earth. Scientists and visitors alike are enriched and educated concerning these prehistoric animals.

Some of the earliest visitors to the North American continent were known as the Norse people and evidence of their visit is found in Canada at L'Anse aux Meadows. Newfoundland is rich with ancient artifacts that chronicle their visit and give a glimpse into the history of Canada and North America.
