Georgian Bay Resort Keeps Pace with Changing Trends in Ontario Vacation Market

Demographics and a shift in customer preferences are changing the way that many Ontario resorts do business. Fewer families are choosing to spend their summer vacations at Ontario's cottage country resorts as they once did. This is due, in part, to the province's aging population who are more discerning and sophisticated in their vacation preferences. While the once traditional Ontario family summer vacation is hardly a thing of the past, Ontario's resort owners can no longer solely depend on family summer bookings to fill their properties and generate sufficient revenue.

"Resort owners need to think beyond the standard vacation accommodation mentality and change with the times. Resorts should be offering a product that will attract the growing couples, boomers and seniors market if they want to fill their properties," states Bruce Bishop, owner of Pleasant Cove Resort. "Most of our customers are looking for more than just a nice lakeside cottage. Seniors and couples in particular are interested in accommodation packages that include activities such as ice fishing, fishing charters and snowmobiling. We have adapted our business over the years to appeal to our changing cliental and to keep attracting guests to the property. Even though Pleasant Cove's successful is due primarily to the quality of our cottages, and our great location on Georgian Bay and the 30,000 Islands, we have found that combining deluxe cottage rental accommodations with a unique activity like snowmobiling or fly-in fishing is especially helpful in filling the resort off-season," says Bishop.

In general, today's consumer is more knowledgeable and discerning than ever before.
They are drawn towards resorts that offer a vacation experience that includes activities and accommodations with luxury amenities, such as Jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces. Although vacationing couples and seniors tend to book shorter resort getaways than families, they are inclined to spend more. However, while seniors and couples may be willing to pay more for value added resort packages, they also expect value for their money. Pleasant Cove Resort understands this market and will continue to package desirable activities and services with their cottage rentals in order to keep attracting business to their resort.
