Lanzarote Bookings Up For Winter 2011

Holiday destinations around Europe face an uncertain few years ahead of them, as consumers have less money to spend, unemployment and taxes are higher, and trips abroad for many are less important than they used to be.

But there was good news for the Canary Island of Lanzarote recently as tour operators released their figures for the early bookings from tourists who have put deposits down for a winter break.

Some indicators show that the number of holidays in Lanzarote being taken over the winter period could be between ten and fifteen per cent higher than last year.

One good reason that the number of people considering holidays in Lanzarote for this winter is simply that the UK had one of her worst winters on record last year, and people were determined that instead of short days and cold long nights would be better spent enjoying some good weather in Lanzarote instead.

Snow and ice can concentrate the mind wonderfully, when roads are impassable and a simple trip to the local shops becomes a logistical nightmare, seeing a forecast for the weather in Lanzarote where it's sunny and in the 70's farenheit in February sent many people to travel sites to see just how much a week or two away in January or February with a cheap flight to Lanzarote might be.

And looking at what's available for the winter months from major tour operators like Thomson and Thomas Cook Holidays it's easy to see why bookings have been going well with those people able to afford the option.

Thomson for example are offering a seven night stay in a hotel in Costa Teguise in early February, with return flights to Lanzarote from London Gatwick and transport to and from the airport for just £317 a person.

Meanwhile their main competitor Thomas Cook Holidays are offering seven nights in Puerto del Carmen, again with flights to Lanzarote from Gatwick, for just £295 a person - unlike Thomson it doesn't include getting to and from the accommodation but still represents a great value winter break which will tempt many people - especially if this winter is similar to the one last year.

Apart from the great deals being offered by the tour operators for the December to April period, the weather in Lanzarote and an awful winter in the UK and Northern Europe last year, there is another factor which is helping to boost the number of early bookings in favour of the island - and that's the unpopularity of other destinations.

Egypt, Syria, Morocco and Tunisia all have had or continue to have political unrest, enough for many people to consider that these destinations aren't safe, especially if they are travelling as a family, and traditionally popular islands like Lanzarote along with the neighbouring Canaries of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are chosen instead.

Another Spanish island that is slowly turning into a year round destination is Majorca, with bookings showing that the number of people booking holidays in Majorca is on the increase for 2012 - with a flight time of two hours compared to four for the Canary Islands convenience is a factor as the weather in Majorca isn't as good during the winter as the Canaries.

There's some excellent deals to be had for when the summer ends, the days are shorter and the nights longer and colder, perhaps it's time to consider having a break sometime between December and the end of March?
