New ownership inspires big changes at Viamede Resort
Viamede Resort (www.viamede.com), a 125 year-old Stoney Lake landmark, has undergone significant improvements since changing hands late last year. In his short time at the helm of Viamede, new owner, Swiss-Canadian hotelier Ben Sämann, has already initiated major enhancements to the resort`s numerous amenities, all the while maintaining his commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the 165 acres of land it rests upon.

In the Spring, Sämann re-launched the 137 year-old Inn at Mount Julian, Viamede`s gourmet restaurant, complete with an impressive 100 bottle wine cellar and a new Chef, Ken Van Mackelbergh. Van Mackelbergh`s focus for Mount Julian, as well as that for the Boathouse Pub and the Dining room, is on keeping the food as homegrown as possible. Ingredients indigenous to the Kawarthas, such as fiddleheads, cat tail shoots and spruce tips, are foraged on-site and fresh produce is delivered by a local distributor, ensuring that everything is grown within a 100 km radius. This emphasis on local food has even led to the creation of Viamede`s very own working farm. The farm currently includes Muscovy ducklings, Indians Runners and a turkey, all living on-site for guests to visit.
Farm Viamede is just one of many outdoor attractions the resort has to offer. Canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, hydro-bikes, motorboats and brand-new Sea Doos are available for those wishing to explore prestigious Stoney Lake. Nature enthusiasts will enjoying hiking the resort`s expansive trail system while guests looking for some rest and relaxation can spend their holiday poolside or beachside, taking in Viamede`s beautiful surroundings.
Sämann notes, "extensive landscaping, renovations and upgrades have given Viamede a fresh look. We`re now displaying local art from some of the Kawartha region's most esteemed artists. We've updated accommodation bathrooms, brought in specialty duvet covers, added new pool furniture, a hot tub room and a new water system - we`re striving to improve upon ourselves every day." Sämann adds, "my ultimate vision is that Viamede will be one of Ontario`s top four-star resorts by 2015. If this year`s progress is any indicator, we`re right on track towards meeting this goal."
