I've always been very sceptical of train travel in New Zealand. It's slow, routes are extremely limited and, for a long time now, the infrastructure has had few upgrades. On the other hand, New Zealand has some of the most scenic train rides in the world with popular tourist routes including the Overlander, TransCoastal and the Transalpine. Train travel is fairly priced, even these "tourist" routes are reasonably priced.

Flying from Auckland to Wellington takes under two hours; driving takes a mammoth 8 hours thanks to circutous roads (admittedly through amazing scenic routes). On the other hand, the Overlander train from Auckland to Wellington takes 12 hours! It's not the fastest option by far but it is much more relaxing than driving and far more scenic that flying ... on most days anyway.
Thinking of scenic, the last part of the train carriage is a viewing lounge of sorts with a semicircular seating area and large windows. There are also exterior viewing areas: everything is designed to make it easy to photograph. This, I think, betrays the function of train travel in New Zealand. While it's too slow for business commuters it's perfect for tourists, sightseers and people on their vacation.
The Overlander stops in several towns on its journey between Auckland and Wellington. While food, drink and beds are available on the train, you may wish to plan ahead, pick up your bags, and stop overnight to have a restaurant meal and sleep in a real bed. It's really up to you; there's plenty of flexibility.
When you travel by train in New Zealand, you can expect to see amazing views and encounter generally friendly staff and fellow passengers. Certainly don't expect a fast service, but one that allows you to travel through beautiful scenery with ease.
