Despite being a quiet town nowdays, it was originally situated on the main road that joined Melbourne and Sydney, Australia's two major cities. So during the gold rush days in the 1800s, it was an incredibly busy location. Perhaps the most historic building in Seymour is the Royal Hotel, built in the 1840s and still standing today. Many a beer has been guzzled inside this venue, and the pub was even the subject of Russell Drysdale's famous painting, "Moodys Pub".
The vast countryside is a gorgeous scenic backdrop with several wine growing and agricultural areas close by. Seymour is very much a farming town and each year holds the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, a three day event where innovations in agricultural technology are presented by some of the best rural inventors from around the world.

If you are driving from Sydney to Melbourne and stop in Seymour, you will have been on the road for about 6 hours.
