The New Cruiser's Guide To Common Cruise Ship Amenities

I've taken many types vacations including family road trips, staying at bed & breakfasts as well as staying in fancy hotels. But my favorite form of vacation is a cruise ship vacation because of the cruise ship amenities.

This is because on a modern cruise ship - the amenities are what help transform it from a mere boat to an actual cruise ship.

Let's face it - when you think of cruise ship - you think of sunshine and swimming pools. But even the worst motel usually has a swimming pool.

You will typically find at least a deep pool for games and of course a shallow pool for the little kids.

And if you can book a cruise on a ship with an adult only pool.

Even if you have kids - you will want a break from them. But if you're like us and are not traveling with any kids - then you definitely don't want to spend your entire vacation at the pool with all of the screaming kids.

There just isn't enough Pina Coladas in the world to offset that.

We often forget about the pool and spend any "pool time" actually in the hot tubs.

The heck with pools - let's talk about the important stuff - the food.

You will never go hungry on ship because you are always surrounded by food.

And no matter your preference or diet - there is plenty of food choices for you.

All ships will have a buffet and a main dining room. Newer ships will also have secondary speciality food stations that server things like hot dogs, pizza and hamburgers.

If the ship has a speciality restaurant separate from the main dining room - we usually take advantage of it as a nice change of pace. But keep in mind these restaurant's are usually an extra charge.

Most women and even some couples will really enjoy the ability relax at the spa. Spas provide an oasis at sea where you can get a massage, a manicure and a pedicure. Cruise ship spas also often offer other options you might not find at a spa at home including teeth whitening.

The spa is one of the busiest amenities on the ship and so you need to book your time early - usually before you even unpack.

But the upside of skipping an excursion for a spa - is no line at the spa and focused attention on you.

A final amenity to look for is children activities. If you have kids - whether it's small ones or teenagers make sure the ship offers dedicated programs for them. Because nothing ruins a vacation faster than a bored child at sea.
