Top Global Adventure Destinations
Adventure travel has become one of the fastest growing products in the tourism sector. Once the preserve of dynamic, young individuals on a one-man mission to tread new ground, travel companies now specifically tailor the adventure market to anyone and everyone who has the money to partake. Whilst many iconic global destinations have become overrun with action-sandal shod and hiking stick totting tourists, there are still many diverse and dangerous locations out there, just make sure you've got your survival kit to hand and travel insurance up-to-date.

Antarctica
Cook's ships crossed the Antarctic Circle in 1773 and various sightings of the polar landscape continued throughout the next century, but it wasn't until 1907 that the Nimrod Expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, really explored this region in earnest. The continent, the most southerly on the planet, has been the focus of great exploration expeditions and scientific study ever since.
Himalayas
Home to an incredible mountain range that incorporates 100 of the highest peaks in the world - including Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga, source of some of the greatest rivers - such as the Ganges, Indus, Yangtze and Mekong, and the location of 15,000 glaciers, including the second largest outside of the polar region - the Himalayas span Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, India and Pakistan.
The Sahara Desert
The world's largest non-arctic desert spans a region of 3.5million square miles, covering most of North Africa and encompassing eleven countries. Reaching from the edges of the Mediterranean right the way to mid Niger, the Saharan landscape incorporates woodland and forest, mountain ranges, coastal desert, scrubland and hyper-arid regions.
The Amazon
The world's largest tropical rainforest, The Amazon virtually spans the breadth of South America, taking in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and is home to the most diverse eco-system on the planet, with over 40,000 plant species, 2,000 mammals and fish, and more than 350 indigenous and ethnic groups. The river that takes its name and snakes through its heart is also the largest on the planet, supplying one fifth of the world's fresh water.
