Guide to Rome: Trevi Fountain

Even looking at all the incredible monuments in Rome, the Fontana di Trevi or Trevi Fountain is one of the city's most spectacular and beautiful pieces of sculpture. It's located in the heart of Rome in the Piazza de Trevi, and is so large that you can hear it from some distance away.
If you're on the way to the fountain, you'll see people start to pick up the pace as they make their way though the narrow streets surrounding the Piazza to reach this amazing fountain. If you're going to the popular and attractive Piazza Navona, which has some fountains of its own, you'll be pretty close to the Trevi Fountain, too.
If you've ever seen La Dolce Vita, you'll remember this impossing fountain, dominated by a statue of Neptune riding in a chariot shaped like a shell and pulled by a pair of sea horses. Water coming from this fountain actually comes from one of the original aqueducts of ancient Rome, and has been flowing through it for thousands of years.
The fountain's building took a lot longer than you might expect. It was first planned when Pope Urban VIII decided the earlier fountain needed to be replaced, in 1629. The famous architect Bernini sketched the new form of the fountain, but the pope died and the project was abandoned for a long time, not to be heard of again until the 1730s.
Then, Nicola Salvi adopted this fountain and had it completed, relying on the Bernini design for some elements, but designing the overall structure and details in the style popular at the time. The fountain was done by the early 1760s.
You'll hear the water some distance from the fountain, and the increasing crowd density and noise will let you know when you're getting closer. The fountain area is often crowded by both day and night by people looking for a great picture. Couples love the romantic atmosphere of the lit fountain at night.
Before you leave the Piazza, don't forget to toss a few coins in the fountain. Three is traditional, but may end in divorce or marriage according to local legend, so most people toss only two fountains - backwards over the shoulder. One ensures you'll make it back to Rome and the other is for your wish, with over three thousand Euros worth being tossed each day.
There are some incredible vacation apartments extremely close to the fountain, located in the Piazza Navona and making trips to all the best destinations fast and easy. It depends on where you're located, but you might get a chance to see the fountain in one of the rare times when it's not busy.
If you're staying somewhere more distant from the Piazza De Trevi, think about taking the Metro to Barberini station or the bus to Piazza Navona, then walk to the fountain. Talk to your hotel or tourist office for more information about a trip to this incredible landmark.
-- About the Author
Choose from our large range of Rome accommodation for the perfect place to celebrate your wedding or anniversary.
